Melissa Auf Der Maur

Melissa Auf Der Maur may have a solo record bubbling up for release shortly, but she's already got her eyes on her next project.

The Montreal bassist-to-the-alternative-stars says The Fucking Virgins, her space rock project with James Iha, Ryan Adams and Evan Dando, just may see the light of day.

"I hope to do it," says Auf Der Maur. "I’ll probably have to be the ring leader to bring us together and do it at some point."

Of course, it's not like Auf Der Maur has had trouble summoning people to work on other projects with her. The former Hole/Smashing Pumpkins player had Iha, Nick Oliveri, Josh Homme, Eric Erlandson, Jordan Zadorozny and about a billion others guests work on her solo record. She also had a short-lived thing with former A Perfect Circle lass Paz Lenchantin and Hole/Motley Crue drummer Samantha Maloney called The Chelsea. But the Virgins remains the thing that could yield the most interesting results.

"We had this really amazing structure about how we’d bring the material in and everything would have to be written just in the studio and it would just be this really good, fun project," she says. "I imagine it would be somewhere between The Velvet Underground and the dreamy, trippy world of Spaceman 3 kind of thing, mixed with a bunch of schizophrenic people."

While "schizophrenic" may be a touch difficult to quantify without a doctor's note, when your other band members are out doing their own thing — Dando focusing on his solo work and also as part of the DTK/MC5 reunion, Iha in A Perfect Circle and Adams, well, being Adams — it's hard to pin down one's cosmic supergroup.

"Jesus, we had it all lined up there a few years ago," she says. "We had 10 days booked out in James Iha’s studio ready to go and then Gold hit it all big and Ryan disappeared for two years. And now I’m busy and James is busy in A Perfect Circle."

But Auf Der Maur won't be put off. It's just a matter of dealing with this tour with The Offspring first.

"I have a vision; I can hear that record in my head. What me, James, Ryan and Evan could do would be amazing — especially as a one-off thing with no commitments, no heavy duty anything other than just in the studio. Oh, my God.

"I really hope I can do it. I’ll get those boys together and do it. They’re all flighty and off in their other worlds for now, but once I get off my Auf Der Maur tour, I will summon them."

Auf Der Maur tour dates with The Offspring:
# May 25 Montreal, QC @ Metropolis
# May 26 Toronto, ON @ Kool Haus
