The Deep End Pumpkin Up the Jam Kiran Aditham Published: Thursday, March 3, 2005 DJing has proven to be the afterlife of choice for the alumni of early '90s alt-rock. From Jarvis Cocker (Pulp) to Tim Burgess (Charlatans) and now James Iha, Billy Corgan's trusty foil/secret weapon in Smashing Pumpkins, musicians by day have found a nighttime muse in the sweaty throng of the urban dance scene. Iha has been playing guitar for supergroup A Perfect Circle since they formed in 1999, but lately, he's been a ubiquitous scenester moonlighting in the New York and Chicago areas as a DJ for hire. In New York, celebrity DJs are as common as hot dog vendors, but Iha's got cachet in a town filled with artists inspired by his rock output. His DJ sets mash up indie, electro, and pop tunes and have rocked everything from fashion shows to Brooklyn hot spots like Misshapes. Now, the bleach-blond Iha brings his musical tastes to Revolver, Miami's Friday-night indie dance institution. Flying Iha down from NYC for the gig is par for the course, according to outdoor DJ/promoter Paul Geller. "Revolver has always drawn notable guest DJs who spin in front of an audience that really appreciates them," he says. "I'm not surprised James is coming, but I am excited." Just spare him the Pumpkins requests. James Iha spins smashing tracks at 10 p.m. Friday, March 4, at Revolver, in the Pawn Shop Lounge, 1222 NE Second Ave., Miami.
