Christchurch, New Zealand: Apr 9, 1998. pg. 23 Column Name: NEW CDS; WHAT'S ON Section: FEATURES, Newspaper Abstract (Document Summary) Who would have thought it? James Iha -- guitarist with sonic rockers Smashing Pumpkins -- is just a big softy at heart. Bursting with warm melodies, feel-good lyrics, and Iha's sweet croon, this debut album is about as far away from the Pumpkins' overblown noisefests as you can get. (Think Texas campfires to the Pumpkins' urban Chicago.) The gentle, folky strains of each song allow Iha to sing about love and relationships (the main theme) and still sound sincere -- without a hint of schmaltz. There is nothing particularly new, but that Iha is having a good time is indisputable. Let It Come Down is an album to curl up with.
