Song Interpretations

One(1) And Two(2)

You and I are one and two
If you count we were both torn in two
You and I are one and two
Both our hearts beat as one did, and you...(oooo)
There's the two of them. And whoever James is (1) feels the other (2) is their soulmate and eternal love. But for whatever reasons they've had a rocky relationship. Both have been deeply hurt (and are still hurting). Yet despite it all 1 still feels in his heart that 2 is his love forever. Sentimentality and memories abound - the D'arcy "oooos" are like vivid imagery in the mind of 1. They are like his timeless memories that make him believe 2 is his true love.
But is it ok?
Is it ok if I runaway
Is it ok
when your love has faded away?
1 would rather run away than see just as a friend or whatever, instead of as a lover. To him, its absolute; all or nothing. There seems to be the hint that his love for 2 would never fade away... only vice versa.
If I hold you tight, and never let go
If I hold you tight, and never let show
the way I feel
All around me
I know it's you
As long as he holds 2 tight he feels the love he yearns for and misses. There is swooning sense of immersion in love and oblivion to anything else when he holds tight, and this is more of the aforementioned absoluteness.
You and I are hopeless too
If I give you all my heart could and I'm true (I need you)
All my life I waited for
And there's nothing left, no there's no one else here to live for anymore
Alright it gets really sad here. 1 admits there are inherent problems with the relationship but still knows they are meant to be. Devotion and loyalty (which in his eyes have been affirmed by the need expressed by 2) are what 1 wants to give to their relationship. His absolute belief is that there is no other outlet for his love.
Is it ok, is it ok if I
I can't escape
In good faith
Or live just one more longer day
One life is but all you are sure of having, and the value of an absolute love is so great because of this value of life. So great that 1 can't escape his feelings and belief in the relationship. It leads to almost 'tragic' self-pity and there's even a suicidial hint here.
*many ahhhhs by James & D'arcy*.
Ahhhhhhh... Just listen to the music here.
If I hold you tight, and never let go
If I hold you tight, and never let show
The way God moves deep inside of you
And I swear it's you
I find this is the hardest part to interpret because of the "God" reference. I take the line to be an expression of love for 2 through the eyes of 1 - to him 2 is always recognisable and never mistakable; pure and always sacred.
If I hold you tight, and never let go
If I hold you tight, and never let go
If I hold you tight, and never let go
If I hold you in my arms forever
All around me
All around me
And I swear it's you
The ending bit is really sad to me. I took it to mean that he inevitably forsakes his love (due to difficulties etc) and ends up with another. But he never overcomes his feelings. He gets the deja vu swooning feeling of holding/hugging his new love, but it is a feeling left over from his absolute love. No matter who 1 is with, he can only love 2 and similarly, love can only remind him of 2.

James is being quite introspective throughout and while he continually questions the relationship's existence, he never doubts its truth and integrity. Also the problems with the relationship seem either not on James' part, or James feels he has no control or way of changing the problematic circumstances. (Of course, the 'his' and 'her' are interchangeable... I've just done it that way because of James and D'arcy... awww...)
