Melissa Auf der Maur is over rock. For the time being, anyway. Although she's planning to record with a supergroup called the Virgins (featuring Ryan Adams, Evan Dando, ex D Generation-er Jesse Malin, and James Iha), for now, the former Hole and Smashing Pumpkins bassist is focusing on her photography. In September, Auf der Maur launched Channels, an exhibt of her surreal work at Brooklyn's tiny Secret Gallery. "I think it's very exciting for Melissa to embrace another type of art form," said former bandmate Iha, who attended the opening-night party, along with Billy Corgan, Eric Erlandson, and indie film queen Parker Posey. Inside patrons drank wine and stared deeply at portaits of late Cars singer Ben Orr, Glenn Danzig, and a drowning kitten-images from her hotel room television taken while Auf der Maur was on tour, hence the title, get it? "Living out of hotel rooms, I developed a relationship with late-night TV," Auf der Maur told us. "These subjects tell the story of my life. They're my friends away from friends in my home away from home." She planes to share her imaginary friends with the rest of the world later this year with her first photo book. Alt-rock-flame-keepers, clear your coffee tables.
